Martin is an experienced fiddle player, teacher and caller. He plays with the Spring Heeled Jacks, the Ship Band, and the Sallyport Sword Dancers. He is a regular session musician and also composes his own music.
Martin started out as a classical musician, enjoying playing in orchestras and chamber ensembles. But his interest in improvisation and playing by ear, combined with having enjoyed dancing at ceilidhs as a child, led him to diversify and bridge the gap from classical to folk.
During his time at Durham University, Martin was president of the Folk Society and organised the Inter-Varsity Folk Dance Festival in 2010. He led the university ceilidh band and regularly performed at venues and events locally.
Martin specialises in traditional music from the North East of England, but his distinctive, lyrical style has influences from across Britain and Ireland.
Martin is available to hire for your event, and comes with a full band and PA. He can provide a night of ceilidh dancing (complete with caller), or a lively evening of traditional music.
